It is symbiotic with our present space-time.\u201d Based on this temporal philosophy, this essay explores artist Mu Ran Gong\u2019s \u201cSoul Island\u201d practice: Why use the Chinese brush to depict undersea realms, foreign peaks, and world landscapes unseen by the ancients? This is not a\u80cc\u79bb of tradition, but rather, using \u201cFantasy-Color Freehand\u201d as a method to activate a symbiotic way of seeing across time and space, gathering the \u201csoul-scapes\u201d scattered throughout the cosmos onto the contemporary picture plane.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

My master, Ran Shi, said: \u201cNature is my teacher.\u201d This \u201cNature\u201d has acquired an unprecedented breadth of definition in the contemporary era. It is not only the sublime scenery of Mount Zhongnan in Travelers among Mountains and Streams, but also the\u5e7d\u84dd of the Mariana Trench, the banner clouds atop the Himalayas, and the\u5947\u5f02 flowers of the Amazon rainforest. Due to geographical and technological limitations, the vision and brushes of the ancients could not reach these realms. However, within the\u65f6\u7a7a\u89c2 of \u201cthe symbiosis of all things,\u201d these\u666f\u8c61 are not \u201cnon-existent\u201d; they have always been in their occurring positions, shimmering with soul-light awaiting to be \u201cseen.\u201d<\/em>
The \u201cSoul Island\u201d\u680f\u76ee is my logbook of sailing with ink as a boat to these realms uncharted by the ancients. Its core methodology is precisely the \u201cFantasy-Color Freehand\u201d system:<\/em>
1. Initiating the Method of Temporal Overlays<\/strong>: When I depict Antarctic glaciers, what I overlay is not merely their physical form, but also the temporal sense of geological ages, the spiritual will of explorers, and the aloof\u610f\u5883 of \u201cwintry forests and snowy scenes\u201d from classical Chinese landscape. The picture thus becomes a crystallization of multiple temporal dimensions.<\/em>
2. The Converging Language of Ink and Color<\/strong>: I use the linear rhythm of the brush to outline the skeleton of coral, and the technique of \u201ccolor breaking ink\u201d to represent the fleeting shimmer of scales on deep-sea fish schools. The traditional \u201cink divided into five colors\u201d expands here into \u201cinfinite light-colors,\u201d yet what\u9a7e\u9a6d them remains the \u201cQi\u201d and \u201cforce\u201d contained within that brush originating from Eastern writing.<\/em>
3. The Colorful Representation of Void Energy<\/strong>: The seafloor is not\u6f06\u9ed1 but an energy field filled with bioluminescence and refracted light; the aurora is the most magnificent dance of void energy. I apply the \u201cTwo Lights\u201d mental model, interweaving subjective warm and cool colors to represent this form-transcending, flowing energy itself, practicing the creative philosophy of \u201cthe ancients had no sun and sky; I supplement them.\u201d<\/em>
The ultimate purpose of all this lies in the \u201cFantasy-Realm Conception Method.\u201d<\/strong>\u200b The truth seen by the eye (a photograph-like\u6d77\u5e95) is not the ultimate truth of the picture. The mission of painting is to \u201clet imagination roam and wonderfully capture,\u201d using unique painterly means to subjectively, poetically, and philosophically \u201cre-create\u201d the objective object. Therefore, the foreign flowers under my brush may contain the genetic code of Dunhuang colors; the foreign peaks I depict might internally resonate with the\u78c5\u7934 momentum of Fan Kuan\u2019s Travelers among Mountains and Streams. What the picture ultimately presents is a realm that possesses an objective subject yet infinitely extends into a conceptual scene, endowed with greater soul-stirring power of life.<\/em>
My mission is to explore an artistic model between tradition and contemporaneity. I do not engage in\u8f6c\u57fa\u56e0-like rigid grafting, nor in a hard landing that\u629b\u5f03 tradition. The \u201cEastern Learning Advancing Westward, Cultural Blending\u201d I pursue takes pure Eastern aesthetic genes as the\u4f53, melting and sublimating global visual experience.
